After a dry season lasting several months, it started to rain. After the rain, like a scene from a 1950s science-fiction movie, mobs of bright red-and-purple crabs emerged and ran down to the shoreline, swarming over the entire beach, crawling over rocks and anything else in the way.
From the Sea torrent
The Torrent de Pareis beach is located at the mouth of a torrent that rises 180 metres above sea level and crosses the Tramuntana mountain range over a length of 3.300 metres.
The erosion and abrasion of torrential water and wind action on the predominant limestone rock in this area of the island initiated a process of karstic dissolution millions of years ago, giving rise to multiple changes in its initial morphology and creating the fracture that we see today full of caves and chasms. Its jewel in the crown is the outlet of this torrent into the Mediterranean Sea, forming a beach that emerges from the sea between two rocky elevations of up to 200 metres high, as if they were two sculptures.
To get to Torrent de Pareis by car, you can depart from two villages located on opposite sides of the island, and one or the other will suit you depending on where you are staying in Mallorca.
Arriving by boat to the area of Sa Calobra is a very good option, especially if you have a hard time with curvy roads or suffer from severe vertigo, as the scenery and the road, although spectacular and unique, can be hell for people with these difficulties.
There are several excursions and group activities with the Torrent de Pareis as the final destination. Most of them have a pick-up and drop-off service to Palma, which is where the activity starts, or you could arrive by public transport to Port de Sóller and from there just hire the boat.
If you prefer to visit the Torrent de Pareis at your own pace, you can also get there by private boat or rental boat, although you should bear in mind that the part that faces the sea is subject to a strong pounding from the sea. Therefore, in this case we do not recommend renting a boat without a licence as it is not very advisable to anchor boats if you are not an experienced captain, although on very calm days you will see many boats in these waters.

Departing from Puerto de Pollença and heading towards Lluc, the first village you will come across is Pollença, one of the most charming towns in Mallorca. In Lluc you should stop to contemplate the Monastery, for its undeniable architectural beauty and historical value.
This excursion along the Torrent de Pareis can be an option to reach the beach or to simply enjoy nature. This hiking route crosses the stream itself from its source to its outlet, in the area of Sa Calobra. If you choose this alternative, we ask you to take the utmost care and caution, as it requires a certain level of physical fitness and skill. This hiking route is not suitable for children.
The descent is recommended between May and October, as during the other months the torrent is usually full of water, making the route even more difficult. A total of 7 kilometres are covered between pools, caves and stone walls that are almost 300 metres high until you reach the beach, which is simply the delight and the culmination of so much effort that will surely have been well worth it.
Its cliffs, vertical walls and breathtaking views make Torrent de Pareis one of the favourite places of pilgrimage for local climbers and climbers from all over the world who visit the island on holiday.
If you prefer to practise water sports or activities, you will not be able to rent any equipment on this beach due to its small size and the final access tunnel to the beach from the Port of Sa Calobra.
On the first Sunday in July, a free concert is held where the best voices of the island come together at the mouth of the torrent, in an unrepeatable setting, with acoustics that have nothing to envy of the best and most famous auditoriums in the world.
However, in the municipality of Escorca you can also find the beach of Cala Tuent, where you can stay; and this is located practically at the same distance from Sóller and Pollença, both being two of our two favourite areas to stay in Mallorca.

Two sediment depth cores were collected from a mud sediment patch at the sea floor of the Irish Sea. Cores were collected by the University of Manchester. Cores were sliced at 1 cm intervals from 0 - 10 cm, and at 2 cm intervals thereafter. Slicing was performed in an anaerobic bag. Samples were transferred to Newcastle University for DNA extraction. A total of 21 samples were extracted for core 1, and 23 samples extracted for core 2.

Torrent de Pareis is one of the most spectacular and unique beaches in the Balearic Islands.Due to thousands of years of erosion from the waters of Torrent de Pareis, that cut through the mountains of Sierra de Tramontana to finally reach the sea on the coast of Mallorca, the spectacular crystal clear and deep blue colour of the sea sits at the bottom of the 200m cliffs with the 25 metre long beach of cala de Sa Calobra in a narrow canyon below.Sa Calobra is untouched by mass tourism due to its limited access restricted through a winding pass or from the sea by boat. To get there is not so easy.After leaving the city of Palma de Mallorca by car, the mountain road includes more than 800 bends and then a 300 metre walk along the cliff edge and through the canyon before arriving at the beach where you can finally relax and enjoy the warm sun and clear waters of cala de Sa Calobra.

Red Bull flowed in my veins, fear had been banished into my bedroom wardrobe, and I chortled in the face of death.","articleBody":"\nWhen it was suggested that I follow up my heroic outing in the shark tank by going hiking, I was understandably unimpressed. I am the man who swims with predators! I have stared death in the eye and he blinked first!! Isn't there a Python I can wrestle? A Sunday afternoon stroll does not sound that exciting.\nThe proposed route was along the "Torrent de Pareis" and a little research showed that this was the most physically demanding walk on the island. A five mile scramble over boulders along a dried river bed that takes between four and five hours.\n"Easy!!" I scoffed. "Four or five hours for little old ladies, I'll do it in two."\nThe walk starts in Escorca, in north west Majorca, and finishes in Sa Calobra on the coast. From Sa Calobra our plan was to then take the ferry to Port d'Soller. This posed something of a logistical conundrum. Starting in one place and finishing in another was, as I'm sure you can imagine, inconvenient. Especially as neither our departure point or destination were anywhere near home. However such trifles were not going to stop me I had overcome bigger obstacles before; did I mention I swim with sharks?\nWith one car parked in Port d'Soller we climbed into a second car and set off for Escorca.\nThe road through the mountains provided spectacular views and some "interesting" head-on encounters German tour buses.\nOnce we arrived at our start point we noticed that everyone else setting off on the walk had hiking boots and back packs, some had telescopic poles and even ropes! But having spent a number of summers climbing in Chamonix I felt sure that we were more than prepared for what lay ahead.\nThe start of the walk was a steep descent down to a grassy valley. The route was fairly obvious and the path clear. There were a few occasions where concentration and careful footing were needed but on the whole it wasn't too much trouble.\nOnce into the gorge itself the views were amazing. Really. Truly. Amazing. The high walls either side of us rose over a hundred feet to a clear blue sky and the boulders that had been washed down the river bed were the size of cars, vans and even houses. There was no clear route but it was not going to be easy to get lost; just keep following the river and climb over anything in the way. Simple.\nWe set off.\n"I'm Indiana Jones" I thought as I climbed over huge rock formations. I had to admit that this was much more exciting and interesting than I had thought it would be.\n"I'm a puma!!" The Frenchman was also enjoying himself. "Watch me leap like a puma!"\nSqueezing through small gaps and picking our own route through the jumble of huge rocks was great fun and whenever I paused and took my eyes off my feet to look up at the cliffs either side of me, it made me smile with childish excitement. It was a real adventure.\nWe passed a number of groups who did not appear to be enjoying the adventure as much as we were. A rather nervous group of Germans were moving very slowly and cautiously through some of the trickier sections and using ropes to lower each other down some of the larger descents.\nI didn't need their rope. I was Indiana Jones and I was on an adventure.\nAfter two hours of adventuring I started to notice that my feet were a little sore and I was getting quite hungry.\nAfter three hours I had turned from Indiana Jones into Paris Hilton. It was hard work and I don't like hard work. "Are we nearly there yet?" I whined.\nIt turns out that four to five hours is how long it takes to complete the walk and I'm now sure that "little old ladies" don't even attempt this route. By the time we arrived in Sa Calobra I was hungry, thirsty, hot and tired. Scrabbling and scrambling over rocks so big that I'm sure they have their own gravitational field is really difficult and we hadn't packed a lunch which was definitely a mistake.\nSa Calobra has a regular stream of tourist boats stopping throughout the day so it is relatively easy to hop on and enjoy a leisurely sea trip down the coast to Port de Soller. The views of the west Mallorcan coastline from the boat are as good as it gets and the journey takes around an hour. Times vary according to the season, so check the boat schedules before you go!\nDespite my climbing credentials and unquestionable bravery I did find the walk hard work. I would certainly recommend a visit to the gorge as the high walls and huge boulders are worth seeing but if you are not fit and active then start in Sa Calobra and turn around when you have had enough.\nIf you do want to try this walk it is probably worth hiring a guide. Not only will they help you with picking out the best route but they can drop you off and pick you up so you don't need two cars.\nSo it turns out that going for a Sunday afternoon walk in Majorca was nearly too much for me and that contrary to my initial belief I am not Indiana Jones.
